Know When to Get Help. . .
Your family can be your greatest source of companionship, love and support. But it can also be a source of anger, pain and sadness.
All families have problems and go through tough times, but knowing when to get some outside help is important. If problems persist over an extended period of time, or if other people involved in your child's life (teachers, friends, etc.) are becoming concerned, it may be helpful to consult with a therapist with the training and experience to work with kids and their families.
Here are some signs that a child might benefit from counseling:
YOUNGER CHILDREN
- Have you noticed a significant drop in your child's school performance?
- Is your child getting poor grades in school despite trying very hard?
- Does your child show signs of worry or anxiety, such as refusing to go to school, go to sleep or take part in activities that are normal for the child's age?
- Does your child often have nightmares?
- Is your child showing signs of hyperactivity; fidgeting; constant movement beyond regular playing?
- Is your child often disobedient or aggressive (longer than 6 months) and refuses to obey authority figures?
- Does your child have frequent, unexplainable temper tantrums?
PRE-ADOLESCENTS AND ADOLESCENTS
- Has there been a significant change in school performance?
- Have you noticed that your teen seems unable to cope with problems and daily activities?
- Has your teen shown signs of sexual acting out?
- Have you noticed signs of depression such as: prolonged negative mood and attitude, poor appetite, difficulty sleeping or thoughts of death?
- Has your teen been using and/or abusing alcohol or drugs?
- Does your teen threaten self-harm or harm to others?
- Does your teen engage in self-injury or self destructive behavior?
- Does your teen have frequent outbursts of anger or aggression?
- Has your teen threatened to run away?
- Does your teen consistently violate the rights of others, oppose authority, miss school, steal or vandalize property?
- Does your teen have strange thoughts, beliefs, feelings, or unusual behaviors?
FAMILY COUNSELING
- Are you feeling overwhelmed with parenting?
- Are you dissatisfied with how you communicate with your children?
- Do you feel guilty most of the time?
- Are your relationships strained?
- Are you looking for help with your child's behavior problems?
- Do you and your partner argue frequently about the children or step children?
- Do you and your partner have general problems with communication?
